Boxrite Head Coach Bobby Mayne started boxing as a 14 year old in 1981 at Como Boxing Club, Kensington PCYC, Western Australia under the guidance of Head Coach Denny Joyce and his assistants Ian Smith, Frank Lockwood and Eric Bushby, originally wanting to learn defend himself against bullies, Bobby was encouraged to enter the Western Australian State Novice Titles competing at 51 kg, which he won the silver medal and continued to compete for a further two years as a Junior eventually winning the 51 kg Junior Golden Gloves Tournament before enlisting for three years in the Australian Regular Army where competed against other army units and regularly represented the army in Tri-Service tournaments.
After being honourably discharged from the army Bobby returned to the UK and Northern Ireland to see how far he could go as a boxer, it was an education training and competing there sparring top level amateur and professional boxers such as then British Featherweight Champion Paul Hodkinson Eastwood’s Gym, Castle Street, Belfast. Hodkinson would go onto win the WBC Featherweight world title. The wealth of experienced gained and knowledge passed on from meeting his childhood boxing idols such as Charlie Magri in London and Hector Camacho while training at Gleason’s Gym in New York fuel his passion to learn as much as he possibly could about the sport of boxing in all aspects, before he would return to Australia and retire from competition.
The experience gained from training overseas found his services as a trainer in demand. Initially, training one on one and group training sessions, then hired by martial art schools, Muay Thai and MMA gyms to set up boxing programs to improve students and fighters offensive, defensive and overall standup skills. In 2004, qualified as a professional boxing / Muay Thai and MMA judge and has judged many top level fights as well as world title bouts. In 2009 he resumed training amateur boxers which a number have competed and won WA state titles and competed at National and International tournaments. And in 2010 the Boxrite Gym was established, after returning from the Philippines having assisted and trained fighters such as Rey Megrino and Rey Loreto to win Regional and world titles respectively and Jujeath ‘Bad Girl’ Nagaowa to successfully compete in regional boxing title fights and OneFC MMA tournaments as well as UFC fighter Brian Ebersole, Bobby was approached by former world contender Daniel Dawson to help kick start his boxing career. Under Bobby’s tutelage Dawson went on to win the WBF World 154lb title and prepared him to compete at the top level of professional boxing in the Goossen Promotions in the US televised on ESPN2 and Top Rank Promotions in Macau televised on Showtime.
With a passion to pass on his experiences to improve others skill levels and understanding of the sport of boxing Bobby published his own bestselling boxing training manual ‘The Art of Boxing: Your Guide to the Sweet Science’ in hardcopy and eBook formats to pass on his knowledge and experiences as a trainer and judge as well as educating the reader on the sport of boxing.
Bobby has found with the exposure from the success of training top level fighters and the popularity of his training book, his services are now in demand for conducting boxing / standup / striking seminars. The Boxrite name continues to grow and improve with the quality assistant trainers that focus on coaching the correct fundamentals along with positive attitude to succeed not only in competitive boxing and combat sports but to be persistent and succeed in life.
